Off topic - Total Eclipse Easter Island...

originally published July 13th, 2010

It is understood that few of you had the opportunity to visit Easter Island for the total eclipse of the sun last Sunday. One of the only 2 airlines flying to the island, LAN Chile (the other is Air Tahiti), was booked solid for over a year and I only got there thanks to late cancellations.

So here are a few photos from the trip for those of you who are interested…

“Smile for the camera” - a couple of large moai near the quarry crater at Rano Raraku…

“May the force be with you” - the power of collective thought was enough to clear the skies following storms the previous day. This site, Tongariki in the east, was the point from which the eclipse was observed…

It took a lot of thought power to disperse the clouds before totality, but at least the clouds provided an opportunity to photograph the partial phase…

Totality - the first total eclipse on Rapa Nui (Easter Island) for 1400 years - most or all of the strange stone figures were made following the last one…

Massive waves from the previous day’s storms…

Easter Island has an idyllic beach, Anakena, on its north-east coast, complete with moai and vendors selling freshly cooked tuna pasties…
